Writing for the Soul

It was just a few days after my return from Argentina that I received my packet which held my Certificate for Completion from the two-year "What's Your Story?" Apprentice writing course (Jerry B. Jenkins Christian Writers Guild - http://christianwritersguild.com).  I  enjoyed the challenges learning to write short stories, life testimonies, creating fictional characters, and tackling the bigger project of a potential novel.

It was a hurried finish in those last weeks as I had responsibilities back to back pulling for my attention - and somewhere in there I needed to prepare for my departure to Argentina.  My last few assignments suffered.  My mentor honestly stated I was a "very busy woman." I wondered if writing truly was in my future.

Writing has definitely been in my past.  I have written stories since I was a young child, created newsletters and even had a couple small articles published.  But, it is my journal where most of my writing has been of focus - reflection, prayer, life experiences, those kinds of things. Who knows what nuggets will come from our life experiences one day?  Just recently I've enjoyed re-reading some of those writings and discovering those precious nuggets.

As I worked through this writing course over the last two years, I discovered fiction. The required lessons gave me the exposure and practice to create characters and life situations.  This was thrilling experience!  I was pulled out of 'what I know' to 'what could be.'

As I looked through the packet in my hand, I read these words: "I am pleased to report that your mentor has recommended you for advancement to the Journeyman level...." With this level, the new challenge would actually be to develop a novel.  This time it is a one-year commitment with the choice of fiction or non-fiction.  So, do I continue to the next level?  If so, which path should I explore....fiction or non-fiction?  These, and other, questions are mulling around in my brain these days.

To be continued....
