Creature of Habit?

A mother was reading a book to her daughter when she came to a part in the story prompting a question from the girl, "What's a habit?"  Her mother replies: a habit is something that is worn.  Hm....what habits am I wearing?  What do these habits say about me?  Each day I dress with intention - clean, tidy, matching, nice, casual, etc.  I wonder.....

Here's what the Dictionary says about habit:
  • A recurrent, often unconscious pattern of behavior that is acquired through frequent repetition
  • An automatic pattern of behavior in reaction to a specific situation; "owls have nocturnal habits"; "she had a habit twirling the ends of her hair"' "long use had hardened him to it"
    • "An annoying habit....like that habit of people who take nonfattening sweeteners in their coffee, and order chocolate mousse" -- Marilyn Sharp
    • "Bad habits are like a comfortable bed; easy to get into, but hard to get out of" -- Rev. Watson C. Blake
    • "Take for granted, like running water." -- Anon
    • "Old habits die hard." -- Proverb
Here's what the Bible says about habit:
  • "Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." I Peter 5:5
  • "But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires." Romans 13:14
  • "Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil." Ephesians 6:11
  • "Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness and patience, .... forgiving each other, as the Lord has forgiven you..." Colossians 3:12-13
  • "And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony." Colossians 4:14
OK - putting on my habit each day, I need to be as intentional as I am with my clothing.

A first intentional habit, is gratitude.  Join me as I log my One Thousand Gifts each day.  Click on the Category at the sidebar of this page for a glimpse.  Maybe you'd like to start a page, too - in your own blog, your journal, your facebook - where-ever.
