Last year, a family icon, Art Linkletter, passed away (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/27/arts/27linkletter.html). Linkletter was known for his TV show back in the early '60's, People Are Funny. There was a segment called, "Kids Say the Darndest Things." This became a household saying in my growing up years, and lately it comes to mind when I see young parents post on-line the "darndest things" their little ones are saying. Oh what joy these little treasures bring!
Just this morning at church, this little 4 year old came up to us and asked why we were sitting in our seats. I told him we were waiting for the service to start - noticing that most seats were still empty as people were mingling and visiting over coffee. He was satisfied, said, "Oh!" and wandered off to the next thing. Later, we were delightfully blessed as we could hear his small voice singing the worship songs at the top of his lungs - from memory.
I miss my own little treasures, now grown. While browsing through some of my old journals recently, I came across the following:
May 24, 1988
...An ambulance passed us by and the kids were wondering who was hurt. It stopped at Baloney Joe's where there was another ambulance. Anna commented she wanted to be an ambulance driver. I asked her 'why' and she said, "or an nurse. I'd like to help people." Heather then piped up and said she wanted to be a missionary to tell about Jesus.
They were 7 1/2 years old at the time. Today - Anna is a nurse, and Heather is a missionary!
Dad took Eric camping. They hunted frogs and did some fishing at Frog Lake. Eric is pictured with his right foot propped on a log holding up his can of "bear pop". From that day forward our family called Root Beer, bear pop.
Eric continues to love the out of doors and treasures later memories with his little brother, Carl, at the same camping spot.
Of course these are just a small sample of what a life time of living our children have shared. As they have grown into adults, I still marvel and am blessed by the wisdom they've obtained and how they continue to minister to my own life - through the darndest things they say.
